A photo blog is a blog that speaks to you through pictures. Technically, it is a photography blog, picture log or simply a photoblog, that is a web application containing periodic posts of user-taken photographs. For the most part, photoblogs are run by amateurs. They shouldn't be confused with a gallery. Although they both share images on the web and are often confused with each other, there are certain characteristics that set them apart from each other.
Photoblogs is a chronological log of photography. Each photo in the log is date stamped and they usually run in the order of the last photo up loaded is the first one you come across. Photo blogs usually have archives so you can go to a certain date and see postings for that day. Sometimes they are sorted by category, but not always. It isn't required to be sorted in categories to be considered a photo weblog.
A gallery, on the other hand, is just a collection of images. These are mostly sorted into different categories or albums to make the images easier to view. They too can have the images sorted by date but it isn't required to be considered a gallery.
In between the two types of photo websites are the Picture a Week or Day (PAW) (PAD) or some other time period blogs. These were the mammas and pappas of photo weblogs and were usually set up to challenge photographers to get out there and get photos done, usually set up by themselves, sometimes as an outside challenge. They most likely were set up as a web ring where you could move from one site to another. The software is what makes these types of sites old-fashioned. They used hand coded HTML or gallery applications for their construction.
There are some amazing sites out there and we have only scratched the surface in the one we feature in this article. Photoblog.org is a great site to access tons of sites.
