The following tips should help you figure out how to write articles, or at least how to begin!
- Understand your audience. If you don't know your target audience you run the risk of writing a superb article that no one cares to read.
- Learn from the best. Read other writer's articles to see how they are able to do it. The more you read the better writer you will become.
- Determine your goal. What do you want to do with your article? Do you want to inform or entertain or both?
- Determine your voice. If you are adept at writing with humor than be sure to include that. If, on the other hand, you are the guy or gal that people run from when they hear you begin a joke than think differently.
- Don't condescend to your reader. You can always give heavy information with a strong voice but without making is seem like you are talking down to anyone.
- Keep current with the world around you. Don't spend time on writing an article only to find out it is already out of date. Think Atari pong and PSP.
Know your market. Check out books like Writer's Market to find the latest publishers. Learn about their submission guidelines and follow them religiously. You can even find their editorial calendars and know when they will be looking for certain articles throughout the year.
Be patient. It takes time to break into the writing world but all the time you spend learning about writing articles will pay off in the end. You might even be able to write an article about how easy it is to write an article!
