Children's Writers

How do children's writers get started? Have you always wanted to be a children's book writer? Have you already written a children's book and are looking at how to get it published? This website will have advice, tips and resources that you might find useful.

One of the first things you should do is consider joining an organization or association geared towards children's book writers such as the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. They are a professional organization for writers and illustrators of children's books. They are dedicated to serving people who write, illustrate, or share vital interest in children's literature. They can help you with information on where to go to submit your book. You can also find many books in bookstores and libraries that can help you figure out the publishing maze.

Before you send your children's book manuscript out to a publisher should you get it copyrighted first? It isn't necessary to copyright your book if you are submitting to a reputable publisher but if you have any concerns you can always take advantage of the 'poor man's copyright' and mail your manuscript to yourself. Leave it unopened and postmarked to give yourself some proof, if need be.

Are you worried that you need to get your book illustrated first? You chances of finding a publisher actually increase without it being illustrated. When your writing is being judged solely upon its own merits it fares much better. Illustrations can weaken your position. If you happen to be an illustrator as well as a writer of children's books be sure and let the publisher know and send separate samples of your work.

An agent might be able to get your work read at those publishers who don't accept unsolicited/unagented manuscripts. But if you haven't been published already it might be difficult to find an agent who will take you on. Try finding a new agent who is willing to take on unpublished clients, do the negotiating yourself, or show an agent how serious you are by providing a resume showcasing any of your other writing positions.

If you need more experience and exposure try submitting shorter children's stories to children's magazines or journals. The Literary Marketplace or The Children's Writers and Illustrators Market are good resources to check for markets. Look for writer's contests and grant awards for new writers.
